How does DECENT work in relation to authors / publishers / content consumers (readers, listeners, viewers)?
The author uses the application to write and organize articles or add media files. When the author is happy with the result, he or she presses the “Publish” button. Author can put his/her own price tag on any content, select a part of the article that will be free to read and add metadata. The application will encrypt the content, find the publishers (independent computers connected to DECENT network running publishing software to keep the network running and receive a reward for doing so). Once content consumers find the content of their interest, they may be notified that their favourite author has published a new article, they will get recommendation based on their preferences or they will simply browse newly published content. After downloading and reading the “free to read” part they can decide to buy the rest of the article by paying a fee specified by the author.
Who can use DECENT?
DECENT is an open source protocol so everybody can use it and explore the world where content distribution avoids any boundaries and restrictions. Simply put, DECENT is being developed for:
Book, blog, podcast, music and video Authors

What kind of content can I find on DECENT?
You can find all kinds of genuine digital content: video or audio files, texts (books, articles, news), pictures or software.
How do I publish my content on DECENT?
Publishing is a process when the new content is stored in the network and information about it is spread among the community. Author creates content and uploads it to the network. The detailed process of publishing is described in DECENT Whitepaper.
How can I buy CONTENT?
Content consumer choose and select content they wish to buy and after their application will download content of their interest. Buying has a form of a contract, starting with promise-to-pay and finishing with payment from the content consumer to the author when the publisher has provably delivered the content.
Does DECENT run on all devices?
The attributes of apps built on top of DECENT fully depend on their creators’ decision. As an Open Source protocol it allows app developers to create applications according to their will. The range goes from Web Apps and Desktop versions to Mobile Apps optimized for various operating systems such as Android or iOS. To demonstrate its functionalities DECENT will be initially available as a Web App, Desktop App and an API.
Does using of DECENT cost something?
No, using DECENT is without any costs. You are paying only for the content that you want to receive. Cutting of the middlemen help us to avoid high publishing costs while blockchain solution ensures there is no need to run an expensive data storage server.
How can I get DECENT tokens?
Firstly, you can participate in the crowdsale which is planned for Q1 next year. During the crowdsale you can purchase DCT tokens for bitcoins. Secondly, you can become a publisher and help DECENT to operate while earning tokens for yourself. Lastly, you can exchange other cryptocurrencies for DCTs on the exchange markets. Specific exchanges will be revealed after the protocol is launched.
How to start mining DECENT tokens?
On DECENT platform miners are represented by the “publishers” who verify all the transactions (including proof-of-retrievability and proof-of-delivery). When publishers generate the block using PoS, they distribute the payments and keep a part of the distributed tokens for themselves.
Can I use Bitcoin on DECENT?
No, DECENT accepts only DECENT token. However, you can make the initial purchase of DCT tokens in the crowdsale (Q1 2016) using your bitcoins.
Where can I exchange other crypto currencies for DECENT tokens?
There will be a number of exchanges where you get DCTs. The exact names will be specified after the protocol’s launch.
Where can I see DECENT live?
At the beginning of next year (2016) you will be able to see the basic DECENT’s prototype which will explain the protocol’s functionalities and various usage possibilities.
Is there already DECENT prototype running?
The alpha version of DECENT is being finalized at the moment. We will provide you with vlogs containing detailed description and explanations once they are ready. Subscribe to our newsletter and get the latest news right when they are public.
Who controls the DECENT platform?
DECENT is fully decentralized. There is no central authority, the platform is owned by its users. The trust is built upon principles of blockchain technology where the transactions are validated by many publishers (seeders) instead of a single entity. Even DECENT Foundation has no more privileges than any other user, it only develops reference clients and keeps the protocol up to date.
Is the platform anonymous?
YES! Anonymity was on top of our mind when creating the project. The authors and their audience are identified only by their IDs and protected by advanced cryptography. Unless they wish to, users’ identity cannot be associated with any given content. This is guaranteed with our unique distribution models and an optional TOR-like anonymization level.
How is the DECENT protocol dealing with authors’ rights?
The goal of the DECENT project is to create a distributed and secure digital content distribution platform where authors can monetize their content. Thanks to the advanced cryptography algorithms, no unauthorized person can access content he or she has not paid for. Also, the content is signed by the author’s public key, binding it to the specific person. Therefore, the consumer can access the content only after the author has been paid.
In DECENT we believe that problem with unauthorized copying cannot be solved with technology. Industry has been experimenting with the various DRM and other copy protection technologies for decades with the limited success, simply because they have been ignoring the fact that if you can hear it, read it or listen to it, you can also store it back in a digital form. The various technologies are often very annoying for paying customers, yet they are just small obstacles for pirate groups. Even though, other open protocols e.g. TCP/IP or HTTP do not implement DRM neither, we are considering to deal with it in the future version of DECENT. However, we believe that the piracy should be fought not on the supply side but mainly on the demand side – the correct pricing, easy access and simple distribution model are the fundamental factors in decreasing piracy. DECENT’s design was made with these factors having been taken into account, and we believe that if authors use it reasonably, the level of unauthorized copying will be minimized.

Why is DECENT free?
DECENT Foundation is a non-profit organization that created DECENT protocol to provide independent and borderless publishing tool. One of our core goals is to cut off any kinds of third parties, that usually require publishing fees. Elimination of middlemen makes online publishing easier and keeps the payments explicitly on the peer-to-peer level (from the content consumer to the author). Moreover, there are no costs needed to run a server as the content isn’t stored at one place but distributed through publishers (miners) who are rewarded for providing their hardware.
Why is decent token the only supported payment method in DECENT protocol?
Due to the fact that it was necessary to implement various types of transactions in order to secure the network and its content, we built our own blockchain. DECENT Token is used as a reward for seeders/miners and it also acts as an anti-spam protection.
Who is behind DECENT?
Founders Matej Michalko and Matej Boda brought the idea of DECENT to realization phase in early 2015. Since then the team of DECENT has grown steadily to a group of experienced developers, designers, marketers, advisors and people who came together to change the future of publishing. Development of DECENT is created by professionals around the globe from Asia to Europe. You can find us in our Team member section.
Do I need to be online to publish my digital content?
Yes. DECENT is an online publishing platform. The process of publishing includes uploading your content and its metadata into the blockchain.
What data transfer protocol DECENT uses?
DECENT is using a modified bittorrent protocol currently. Integration of additional data transfer protocols is planned in the future.
Is there a mobile application for DECENT?
Currently not. After the launch, DECENT as an Open Source protocol allows app builders to create their own apps on top of the protocol. These applications can be designed as desktop but also mobile apps.
Can I buy DECENT tokens with fiat currency ($, £, €, …)?
No. DCT Tokens can be exchanged only for other cryptocurrencies. You can purchase them in our crowdsale (Q1 2016) or use any of the exchanges that will be specified once the protocol is launched.
What makes you different from Bittorrent?
The biggest advantages of DECENT are complete anonymity both on a payment layer and content consuming layer, decentralized P2P micropayments and direct relationship between author and consumer (one-to-many data model). In comparison to Bittorrent, content on DECENT is encrypted . Even publishers (seeders) don’t know what they are seeding. Unless you explicitly wish to reveal your identity, you stay anonymous. Author’s reputation depends on the rating he/she receives from the content consumers and it is saved in the blockchain. Thus the lifetime reputation for each author and each piece of content is ensured. As an author, you can start publishing for free, build a reputation and later begin to charge for your digital content (articles, books, music, video etc.)
