A Very DECENT Holiday: a story to warm the cockles of your heart

Prologue

As 2017 comes to a close, we here at DECENT wanted to take a moment and look back at our progress. And, what an amazing year we’ve had! In the spirit of the holiday season, we’d like to share a little story and thank each and every member of our hard working team, our forever supportive community, the many partners and advisors of our projects, and everyone who has contributed to our success thus far! Now, throw another log on the fire and get ready for a Very DECENT holiday story.

Chapter one: A cold day, long long ago (1 year ago)

It was a bitterly cold day, winds were blowing something fierce. 2017 had only just begun, folks were still writing ‘16 on their bank slips, when they dared venture out, that is. For the goodfolk at DECENT, hibernation was not an option. The team was eagerly preparing to reveal a cool new website with features demonstrating the benefits of DECENT as a blockchain platform for digital content distribution. Our freshly presented image quickly captured the attention, and hearts, of blockchain big shots and crypto-traders, and the community grew strong. With ongoing updates to our platform and website we quickly obtained a dedicated group of testers for the early phases of our project. The first testnet, “Caesar,” launched in March.

As the snows and winter winds faded to a distant memory, the spring rains proved a busy time for us. From March through May the testers tested and developers developed, all the while collecting invaluable feedback. The platform advanced with the triumph of Caesar and it lead us deeper into the amazing possibilities of blockchain and data exchange. Next came “Alberti”, the second phase of our Testnet. Alberti went live at the end of May and with it came great success and proof that we were ready for a larger audience. It was time to spread the word

Chapter two: Let’s talk about DECENT, baby.

By the time Alberti was well underway, we had already found ourselves at a whole host of hosted events, some we even hosted ourselves. We traveled to wonderous far off places, some not so far off too, and presented in places like Zurich, Vienna, Bratislava, Munich, Hong Kong, Dublin, Poprad and Prague. We also hosted important blockchain meetups and events in both London and Bratislava. With an enhanced presence and growing prestige, we made a surprise announcement to the public. At the end of June, alongside the launch of the official DECENT blockchain, we would simultaneously release our own secure web-based wallet to store our custom purposed crypto-token, DCT.

The sun was shining brightly, but there would be no beach vacations for us, our web wallet was out, months ahead of schedule and we were already working to extended its features to showcases what our blockchain technology is capable of. At first we called it DECENT Go, but over time the nickname, DGO, simply stuck. As the summer months marched on, our team would grow and there was much activity as we hit the streets to promote our blockchain, seeking new partnerships, testing and exploring various use-cases, and expanding our core functionality.

Chapter three: Next stop, Asia.

Over the course of the year, we expanded our offices in China and made two big appearances in Asia as well. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia we attended “Blockchain Disruptors”, an event aimed at exploring how this technology extends beyond the financial sphere. At the Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai we linked up with our China-based team to engage blockchain enthusiasts and refine our marketing strategy.

Our ties to Asia grew even stronger in September when our President, Matej Michalko, agreed to a collaboration with Gratia Christian College in Hong Kong to enlighten young minds about the power of blockchain technology.

Chapter four: Equidato is born.

As fields began to ripen so to did we begin to see our hard work come to fruition. We signed one of the biggest partnerships we had seen to date when we teamed up with Venaco Group, a leader in innovative technology integration, and formed a joint venture company called Equidato Technologies AG. Combining DECENT’s blockchain and Venaco’s Business savvy we created SophiaTX, the ultimate blockchain for business.

SophiaTX targets businesses of all sizes which use business enterprise applications and provides a platform for seamless blockchain integration. SophiaTX just held their Token Generation Event and despite rising difficulties for token sale events it proved to be one of the most successful in December 2017, raising $23,470,356 in just 10 days and distributing 150 Million SPHTX tokens to participants.

Chapter Five: Onward to glory and awards.

Before an already busy September could come to a close, we hit another milestone, bringing home two awards from the Central European Startup Awards (CESA). We were recognised for the quality of our team with awards for startup of the year & best newcomer.

Before the end of the year, we would also would win the Challenger Award, which is given to a technology company that has seen outstanding success in the previous year and has the potential to hit it big in the coming year.

Chapter Six: DGO, now with marketplace functionality.

One of our biggest announcements of the year came in October with the beta release of DGO’s marketplace functionality. This in-house product allowed for the world to see, for the first time, our platform carry out blockchain secured transactions. Built to demonstrate a small, but no less important, sample of the capabilities of our blockchain, DGO helped in our search for new collaborators and partners.

Chapter six and half: We got this, Unchained!

With a score of presentations, more than a few keynote speeches, and a few years of blockchain conferences under our belt, we saw an opportunity to put together an event which was truly unique. The Unchained Conference mixed top level crypto-preneurs with global blockchain behemoths in Hong Kong. It was the beginning of many fine friendships and a perfect way to round off a fruitful season of conference appearances.

Chapter Seven: A Pivotal moment.

The world is wide and our tech is simply too big to keep to just one or two continents. We needed to show the world just what we are capable of. We opened our first office on US soil, in NYC, and we reached out to our friends at Pivotal Entertainment. Dedicated to the creation, marketing, and distribution of quality entertainment through innovative technologies, Pivotal and DECENT were a perfect match. Together, doors were opened and even greater opportunities uncovered.

Late in the year we sponsored the Gotham Awards, which kicked off a series of meetings that has lead to a number of negotiations. By the end of the year we would lay the groundwork for some incredible collaborations, from working with a prestigious annual film screening series to a potential partnership aimed at bring power and agency back to filmmakers, content creators and their fans.

Chapter Eight: Our core technology gets a shiny new name.

The leaves changes from verdant greens to fiery fall colors and pumpkins became jack-o-lanterns while the core technology of DECENT got a significant update. Even with a top product we found that some people still weren’t grasping our true identity. We realized this was, in large part, our fault. We had been touting the content distribution capabilities of our technology even though much more can be done with it.

Our founder, Matej Boda, sought to remedy the situation and reached out to the community to explain some of the seemingly endless use-cases we could handle. A mini rebranding followed. Our core technology would henceforth be called, DCore. With this new name, and a dedicated landing page, we were better equipped to talk about our open-source blockchain adaptation and the amazing things that could be accomplished with it.

With the snow falling once more and DECENT looking better than ever, the year was coming to a close. The time for family and festivity was once more upon us, a magical time, a time for reflection but also a time for looking ahead.

Epilogue: Looking ahead to 2018

We’ll continue to work on the SDK, as with most SDKs this will be an ever-evolving project. If you are looking for latest developments be sure to check out our GitHub. Your feedback and suggestions will help us continue to improve our developer tools so we can deliver our technology to even more projects.

Also, in January, we plan on announcing the details of our filmmaker collaborations and a few more exchanges, some big some small but all are important for the future of DECENT. Big things are also happening for DGO early in the coming year.

The plans and projects we’ve listed here will be added to a more official public roadmap.

There are still many talks, meetings and negotiations across many industries. From Films  and Gaming to Music and eBooks. There are even some things happening on DCore that we have absolutely nothing to do with, that’s the beauty of open source technology. If you are interested in our technology check out DCore. If you want to know more about our company head over to our website.

From all of us at DECENT we wish to thank you once more and wish you all Happy Holidays
